This is not to be confused with Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center, but the concept is very similar. Here’s an excerpt from their FAQ that explains the concept:
- How does an Opposing Views debate work?
- Each debate starts with Opposing Views picking a central question on people’s minds. We then invite interested experts, opinion leaders and advocates to pick a side and weigh in. Experts can present as many arguments as they choose. After that, experts are able to counter each opposing argument one time. The author of the original argument can then respond to each counter. Thus, our debates last three rounds: Argument, Objection, and Response. That’s it. [via Opposing Views FAQ]
What I like immediately about this resource is the concise argument from the “verified” experts on current issues. Responses can be posted using mixed media, such as image of graphs or videos that support each argument. I don’t see this replacing our Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center (OVRC), but I can see this as a nice supplement to current issues which might lead to further research on the topic in OVRC. It is also a great way to identify the current “experts” on each topic. Finally, each debate has a comment section that lets you see what visitors felt about each issue. This is definitely a good resource to keep an eye on.
I am definitely going to use this for my class! Thanks so much Ken…
